You might assume that as soon as the new glass is dropped into the frame, you can grab your keys and drive off. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. The actual hands-on work accounts for only a fraction of the total time. The real waiting game comes down to complex chemistry and basic safety.
The Physical Installation Process
Removing shattered or cracked auto glass is a delicate process. A technician cannot simply pry the old windshield out with a crowbar. They have to carefully cut through the original factory seal without scratching the metal frame underneath. Even a tiny scratch on the pinchweld—the metal lip that holds the glass—can lead to severe rust issues down the road.
Once the frame is prepped and cleaned, the technician applies a thick bead of specialized urethane adhesive around the perimeter. The new windshield is then lowered precisely into place. From start to finish, the physical removal and installation usually takes an experienced professional about an hour to complete.
The Hidden Factor: Minimum Drive-Away Time
Even though the glass is sitting nicely in the frame, your appointment is not over. You have to wait for the Minimum Drive-Away Time (MDAT.
This is the mandatory waiting period required for the urethane adhesive to cure and harden. Your windshield does not just block the wind; it acts as a critical structural component of your vehicle. If you get into a front-end collision, your passenger-side airbag deploys upward, bouncing off the inside of the windshield to protect the passenger.
If you drive away before the adhesive cures and hit another car, the explosive force of that airbag will literally blow the new windshield right out of the frame. To ensure the glass stays in place in a crash, wait at least 30 minutes and up to 3 hours after it’s set before you drive off.
How Alberta Weather Affects the Wait
The biggest variable in your waiting time is the weather. Urethane adhesive is moisture-cured, meaning it relies on heat and humidity in the air to harden properly.
During a hot, muggy Alberta summer afternoon, the adhesive cures rapidly. You might reach your safe drive-away time in just thirty minutes. However, our freezing, bone-dry winter months are a completely different story. Cold temperatures drastically slow down the chemical reaction. If a mobile technician installs a windshield in your unheated driveway in the middle of January, standard adhesive could take several hours to become safe.
To combat this, professional shops often use specialized fast-cure winter urethanes or perform the work inside a climate-controlled bay. This ensures your vehicle is safe to drive much faster, regardless of the weather outside.
The ADAS Calibration Addition
If you drive a vehicle built in the last few years, you also have to factor in your Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The safety cameras mounted behind your rearview mirror have to be perfectly realigned after a new windshield goes in.
Depending on your specific make and model, a technician might need to take your vehicle for a controlled test drive or set up specialized target boards in the shop. This calibration process usually adds 30 to 60 minutes to your total appointment time.
